Grade Specific Environmental Education Programs

 

The following Life Science programs are designed for the grade level indicated.

 

Kindergarten: Life Cycles of Plants, Life Cycles of Animals, Life in the Wetlands

 

First Grade: Organisms and Their Environment, Plants have a Life Cycle, Life in the Wetlands

 

Second Grade: Animal Life Cycles, Animals and Their Habitats, Wetland Habitats

 

Third Grade: How Plants and Animals Survive, Soil Structure and Change, Wetland Habitats

 

Fourth Grade: Interaction of Plants and Animals, Effects of Organisms on the Environment, Wetland Diversity

 

Fifth Grade: Biotic and Abiotic Factors in a Living System, Environmental Quality, Wetland Diversity

 

Sixth Grade: Effects of Rainfall on Land, Structures and Function of Plants, Wetland Ecology

 

Seventh Grade: Analyze Soil Properties, Analyzing Watersheds, Populations and Ecosystems, Wetland Ecology

 

Third–Twelfth Grade: Ornithology, Fresh Water Ecology–Wetlands

 

Eighth–Twelfth Grade: Biodiversity, Ornithology, Wetland Ecology

 

Saluda River Interpretive Canoe Trip

 

Second–Twelfth Grade 

Paddle a water trail on the Saluda River to Sandy Island with a Park Ranger as your guide.  Explore the shoals and learn about the unique habitat they form. Discuss how man’s interaction with the environment affects this aquatic habitat.  Learn basic canoeing and river navigation skills. Program lasts two hours.  

Fee:  $10 per student.  Maximum 20 students. 

Required student/chaperone ratio: 

  Grades 2–8, 1 chaperone per boat (2 students). 

  Grades 9–12, 1 chaperone per 5 students. 

  Additional chaperones: $10 per person.
