Parks and Recreation Intern Job Description

Objective:  To assist with the promotion of programs and special events for the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission while learning skills related to parks, recreation and tourism management. 

Hours: 40 hours per week; must equal to a minimum of 400 hours over 10 consecutive weeks

Compensation: Interns receive a weekly paid stipend of $360.00

Program Eligibility & Submission: 

  • Students interested in the field of parks, recreation and tourism management
  • Must enjoy working with public sector
  • Complete internship application
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Interview with Superintendent of Recreation and Administrative Services Director 

 

Responsibilities: 

Perform recreational and program duties to support the success of ICRC including: 

  • Delivering exceptional customer service
  • Operating recreational software
  • Demonstrating work phone etiquette
  • Creating registration forms
  • Planning a league (i.e. teams and activities)
  • Recruiting coaches
  • Leading coaches meetings
  • Conducting a player’s clinic and player draft
  • Creating practice and game schedules
  • Ordering equipment
  • Stocking and running a concession stand
  • Managing upset patrons and confrontations
  • Planning special events
  • Developing a budget
  • Soliciting and recruiting sponsorships
  • Maintaining facilities
  • Designing and editing marketing materials
  • Assisting IT/IS department with hardware/software maintenance and upgrades
  • Working with accounting department on accounts payables, governmental reporting, and agency budget review

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, written, verbal, and interpersonal
  • Good administrative and IT abilities (including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Excellent customer service
  • Comfortable carrying out routine tasks individually and as part of a team
  • Good listening skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent team player
  • Previous parks and recreation experience
  • Creative ideas on how to publicize new programs and events assisting
